Austin Land, a seasoned mule deer guide, spotted a truly special velvet buck on July 31. The deer, nicknamed “Gear Head,” had a huge, unique spread and wide rack. Austin, along with his wife Taylor Drury and some friends, spent the final week before bow season learning the buck’s patterns. Despite losing hope after not seeing the deer several times, the hunters encountered Gear Head on opening day thanks to a blustery mountain storm.

They quietly stalked the feeding bucks, managing to get within 50 yards of them. However, the wind picked up and a lightning bolt struck nearby, startling the deer. Gear Head fled straight toward the hunters, but stopped at just seven yards upon spotting them. He changed course and disappeared into a large stand of trees.

The next day, Austin and Colton found two bucks that Gear Head hung around. Recognizing their potential, the brothers set up high on a hill overlooking the area. The following morning, they spotted Gear Head leading a herd of seven other bucks. After several unsuccessful stalks, the brothers finally got within 18 yards of the buck, but still didn’t have a shot.

Determined, they continued looping around the deer, attempting to get a better position. Eventually, they spooked the deer and had to call off the hunt until the next day. When they found Gear Head on the ridge with the other bucks, Austin and Colton chose a spot to wait for him. After waiting for over six hours, they decided to slip into the aspen stand to locate the big buck.

They got within 40 yards of Gear Head, and this time, Austin had an open shooting lane. With the buck broadside and feeding, Austin ranged him at 35 yards and released the arrow. The shot was perfect, and they found Gear Head lying motionless with a hole in his side.

Austin’s wife, Taylor, and their friends watched the entire hunt unfold through binoculars. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. They estimated that the buck was over 6 years old, weighed over 300 pounds, and had a green-gross score of just over 201.

For Austin, hunting mule deer is a lifelong passion, and this hunt was a dream come true. The memories made during this incredible experience will be cherished forever.

God bless mule deer.
