Louisiana Hunter Takes a 260-Pound Boar and First Buck from Same Stand
Wild hogs are common in the South, particularly in Louisiana where rivers and lowland bottoms provide ideal habitat. However, on Dec. 21, 22-year-old rookie deer hunter Ashton Corcoran encountered a wild boar unlike any other in Washington Parish.
Corcoran had only hunted deer for two seasons and had previously harvested a doe with his bow in October. On that cold morning, he climbed into his stand, borrowing his brother’s Remington 700, after seeing trail cam photos of a good buck on family land north of New Orleans.
“I got in the stand early, well before daylight, in the cold,” said Corcoran, a recent graduate of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. “As the sun rose, I spotted a deer feeder about 50 yards away. Then I noticed a massive black blob moving around. It was so big and black, I thought it was a bear.”
Through his scope, Corcoran soon realized it was a giant wild hog—the same one captured in nighttime trail camera photos seen by him and his family. However, they had never spotted the enormous pig during daylight hours.
“We called him ‘The King’ because of his enormous size and dominant behavior,” Corcoran explained. “The area is home to a significant number of hogs due to its proximity to a river. But this pig was different, a true giant.”
Corcoran carefully aimed his .243 rifle behind the hog’s shoulder and fired. The shot caused the hog to lunge forward before collapsing dead just 20 yards away. With some difficulty, Corcoran, his brother Micah, and a friend managed to load the massive animal onto a UTV. The feral hog weighed an impressive 260 pounds. The following day, Corcoran returned to the same stand and successfully shot his first deer with a rifle—a 2-year-old 8-point buck.
“It was an incredible two-day hunt and a fantastic Christmas gift for me,” Corcoran said.
To commemorate the experience, Corcoran intends to have European skull mounts made of both the massive hog head and his 8-point buck.
